What is Rooockstar?

At Rooockstar everything is about musical gear and equipment. There are thousands of websites, forums and user groups on the web about music gear. But Rooockstar is the only place on the Internet that is completely devoted to provide a simple but powerful platform where musicians can show their equipment.

Rooockstar offers the free creation of a personal profile, where you can provide information about your musical person. The key feature of your profile is the ability to add as many instruments and rigs as you want. At the moment the following data can be added to each instrument:

- 5 photos (each photo with a max. size of 3mb)
- Unlimited number of Flickr® photo-sets
- Unlimited number of Youtube® videos
- 5 PDF documents (each document with a max. size of 3mb)
- Unlimited number of web-links

We`re working hard to develop more cool features, so keep your eyes open!

Why should Rooockstar be cooler than other gear platforms?

Is it? Really??

Many gear platforms are run by members of the music industry and are focused to sell more equipment. Rooockstar is made by musicians and for musicians... with a little help from a few geeks that have no clue about music ;-)

Rooockstar is not meant to be the only gear website on the net. We try hard to implement as many great features from other sites like Flickr® or Yourtube as possible. Think of Rooockstar as a data binder for all information around your equipment. No matter where it comes from or where it`s being hosted.

Is Rooockstar free?

Yes, all basic functionalities are free of charge.

We plan to implement premium content for paying members in the future. But we guarantee that all of the fun stuff stays free!

Can I use photos or videos that I host on other websites?

If you have a FlickrŽ or YoutubeŽ account you can attach your photos or videos to your instruments. We plan to implement more API`s to Rooockstar. If you know a cool service, let us know!

Archiving and deleting gear

You can either archive a gear page or complete delete it.

Archiving gear
Archiving will move the item to you archive folder. The gear will not be shown on your gear overview page but still can be found via the global search function. Why that?

Every single gear page is a great value for the Rooockstar.com database. Even if you no longer own a certain piece of equipment, other user can benefit from the information you give. That`s why we would like to encourage you to archive gear instead of deleting it.

Deleting gear
Once you`ve deleted a gear-page, all related documents and information will be completely removed from the database and from the Rooockstar.com servers. This action cannot be undone! We ask you to only use the delete function if you…
… have used wrong manufacturer or product title information.
… have found any copyright problems or have been informed about such.
… believe that you really don`t want to share your gear information with the world anymore.

Gear description

The gear description is the main content part of your gear detail page. Here you can enter text-based information about your beloved equipment. HTML is not allowed, so please focus on the words you write, instead of linking to other resources. Here are a few hints what you could write about:

Basic description
Write about the main specifications.
Example: "This is a 2006 SSH equipped American Stratocaster in pearl white with a maple body and a rosewood neck."

Main use
Give some information about what you use the gear for.
Example: "I use this axe mainly in my blues cover band in combination with a Vox AC-30."

Specialities
What is so special about this item?
Example: "The guitar is very well balanced and plays easily. The sound is warm and open. Perfect for moody blues tracks."

Problems (and solutions!)
What problems do you have with the gear (and how did you solve it)?
Example: "The action was very high when I bought the guitar. But my local guitar store could easily fix that for me."

Uploading photos

You can upload up to 5 photos per gear page. 1 photo will be your main photo and be used as a thumbnail icon e.g. on your gear overview page or the search result. The other 4 photos will only be shown in your gear detail page.

Formats & Sizes
You can upload photos in the following formats from your local computer:
.jpg
.jpeg
.png
.gif

The maximum size per photo is limited to 6mb. For best display results please make shure that your photos have a minimum width of 1000 pixels and a resolution of 72dpi.

Edited formats
Once you`ve uploaded your photos, they will be converted to standard .jpg files with a maximum width of 1000 pixels and a resolution of 72dpi. For legal reasons each photo will get a (very) small watermark.

Replacing existing photos
When you replace an existing photo with a new one the old document will be deleted from the Rooockstar.com servers. This cannot be undone!

Adding Flickr® photo sets

You can add photo sets from your Flickr® account directly to your gear page. To do so, your photo set has to be set to “public”, so everyone can view your images (to learn how to set the permissions of your photos please visit the help section on www.flickr.com).

To add a set to your gear page you have to enter your Flickr® username. After clicking “Get my sets” simply select your desired set. As long as your photos are public and exist on Flickr® they will be shown on your gear page.

Adding YoutubeŽ videos

You can add videos from your Youtube® accounts directly to your gear page. To do so your video has to be set to “public”, so everyone can view your movie (to learn how to set the permissions of your videos please visit the help section on www.youtube.com).

To add a video to your gear page you have to enter your Youtube® username. After clicking “Get my videos” simply select your desired movie. As long as your videos are public and exist on Youtube® they will be shown on your gear page.

Uploading documents

Documents can be uploaded to your gear page in PDF format. To do so your original file must be a PDF already. We cannot convert it for you.

Size limit
The document to be uploaded must not be larger than 6mb.

Copyright
If you`re not the author of the document please make sure, that you have the legal right to distribute it.

Adding web links

Adding web links to a gear page is as simple as giving the respective URL and a short link description. Please use the following format for the URL:
http://www.URL.com

The link will be opened in a new window.

Tagging

Tags are an essential part of your gear page and we ask you to use as many tags as possible for your gear. Tags are keywords or labels that describe certain specifications of your gear. The more tags you add for one gear the easier it will be later to find it.

You can use tags to describe technical details of an item like e.g. “60 Watts”, “3 Channels” or “Stereo Loop”. But you can also use tags to label equipment with personal notes such as e.g. “My favourite bass” or “Dream guitar”.

Tags are a great way to structure complex information pools. Searching gear on Rooockstar.com using tags is not only fun but also very effective. Because tags not only describe items but also say a lot about what people feel about it.

By tagging your gear, you`re contributing to a constantly growing knowledge base of gear information. Your`re part of creating one of the biggest and most helpful gear information places on the net!

How to tag
Simple add tags on your gear page using the tag input field. While typing, the system will show you similar existing tags that you might want to use. You can use as many tags as you like. Existing and new ones.

Commenting

Everyone with an account can add comments to a gear page. You must be logged in to use the feature. HTML is not allowed.

The owner of the gear page has the right to delete comments without further notice. The creator of the comment will not be informed about this action.

Please read the Terms of Service before your first post. It is important that you know, understand and accept the rules for posting information on Rooockstar.com. Any verbal abuse is strongly prohibited. Breaking this rule (and others described in the Terms of Service) can result in the termination of your Rooockstar.com account.

Flag as inappropriate

If you find any information that could harm the copyright of others or do not conform to our Terms of Service we ask you to flag the gear page containing these information. To do so, simply click the “Flag as inappropriate” link on the right side bar. Our staff will then review the page and contact the respective page owner if necessary.

By flagging a page, your account information will be sent to our administrators but not to the page owner.

Send to a friend

The “Send to a friend” link allows you to send an automatic email containing the URL of a selected gear page to an email address. In this email your username will be visible but not your email address or other personal information.

Uploading MP3 audio files

The mp3 files you wish to upload can be encoded in any way you want to. It is recommended that you create small files. The mp3s will not be edited or newly encoded after they are uploaded to the Rooockstar.com servers. There is a file limitation of 6mb per file.

While you will always get the original file on your own gear page, a visitor will only be able to play it in a flash based audio player. Others cannot download the file.

Can I upload any content I`d like?

No. You can only upload content that you personally created. That means only photos and videos that you shot, sound files that you recorded and documents that you wrote. If you have the permission to use files from someone else, you can use that too, of course.

Please do not copy in any case content form a manufacturers website!

Users who do not respect the copyright of others will be banned from Rooockstar.
