Baritone Special

from berndhep, 1 Comments, 775 Views

This is a Japanese made guitar. It was quite cheap but I felt some soul in it. So my mates at Gitarren Total in Zurich modded it with the great Duesenberg P90 pu`s and a saddle.

Awesome 7 string baritone. One of the few sevenstrings in my opinion that are really awesome to do rhythmguitar on.

7string with 27" baritone scale. Limited edition, first baritone 7string ever made by Ibanez. Bindings and dots glow in the dark... :)

Played "dry", it already has a very powerful sound, a nice "Roar!!" if you know what I mean. ;) It seems like Ibanez used some very good woods on these. The rosewood fretboard looks different from the 'boards I use to know, it it more of a red-brown color which looks pretty sexy.

I changed the pickups (see specs) and rewired the 5way switch: Position 3 is now neck+bridge pu in parallel. I added a push/pull tone pot to split the humbuckers in positions 1, 3 and 5 (in position 2 and 4, the humbuckers are always split - it's just more useful this way). So now I have 8 different sounds on this guitar.

Fairly rare, the German Ibanez distributors themselves couldn't tell me how many of these had been produced. But the number has to be somewhere between 24 and 100.

My (and Ibanez's) first 8string. It has EMG808 pickups and 27" scale. I really like the 4+4 headstock design.

It has a well-defined sound, very clear and not muddy at all. But I missed something I cannot describe... Maybe I'm simply not an "active" guy. I even like the look of passives more, I have to see polepieces ;)

The stock 8th string was a bit floppy and lacks definition. I never came to the point of changing strings, but I would've put on a thicker one then.

The playability was way better than I thought, I had absolutely no problems getting used to the wide neck. It's very inspiring playing with that new possibilities of playing notes on different strings than before. But that's something you can have with a 7string, too, so... I kept on searching for the use of the 8th string ;)

Unfortunately, it was a bit heavy and, you know, it was simply black. Okay, "galaxy black", alright, but in the end, it's just another shade of BLACK. ;) To be honest, I might have kept it if it had only a nicer look. Maybe just natural or something dark with binding...

RG2228

My 2nd RG2228!

I regret that I sold the first one too early. I never really tried to discover the full potential of an 8string. Hopefully, this time I'm wiser.

Those guitars are not for everyone, keep that in mind. They can be quite heavy (as my 1st one was) and have a surfboard neck. But I'm sure you can discover some nice songs with those beasts.

The craftmanship and playability is very good on the 2228. If you already have a 7string, you won't have any difficulties playing it. It only takes a quite short time to get used to it.

I already have a Duncan Blackout lying around that is going to be placed in the bridge position. Quick connectors are a nice thing regarding this. :)
